During three years during the middle of the 1970's, Melrose did have a Boy Scout troop. Membership included approximately two dozen boys. The position of scoutmaster was held by two men during these years. The first was Dr. Tim Scanlan (pictured here with committee member Tom Borgerding.) The second scoutmaster was Roger Schumacher.

Many boys who were members of the troop during those years were Scouts during the entire duration of the troop. Two of these Scouts were brothers Steve Borgerding and Dan Borgerding. Steve served as senior patrol leader. Dan served as a patrol leader.

The Troop 68 of the 1970's usually had three patrols. The Cougar Patrol is pictures here. This picture was taken during summer camp at Parker Scout Reservation in 1976. Parker is located near Merrifield, Minnesota.

The Parker Scout Reservation beach was just as popular in the 1970's as the beaches at summer camps are today. No one can resist going for a swim on those hot summer days. This picture of Steve Borgerding was taken during summer camp in 1977.
(Yes, Steve did have hair when he was 17 years old. Who could have guessed at that in only four years this boy would become scoutmaster of his troop.)

Every summer camp held competitions during the week. One of the events during the summer of 1977 was a sand castle building contest. Tim Carstens took a moment to relax after finishing this creation.

During another of the 1977 patrol competitions some members of Troop 68 receive instructions on what must be accomplished. If you look closely in this picture you will see one Scout who will become a scoutmaster, and another Scout who will one day have his own two sons as members in Troop 68.
